Wellington Karate Academy has been located at the Pretoria Street Lower Hutt dojo since 2010.

Founder Lance Lissette and other black belt members trained in a Shotokan based style for many years before starting the club in 2005. 

 

The club is now owned and run by Andrew Anderson, 6th dan black belt in WKA and 3rd dan in Ryukyu Dento Kobu-jutsu Kyokai.

 

In January 2026 the club absorbed members of Ishinryu Karate upon retirement of Sensei Phil Laing.

 

The club has adapted training methods to suit different karate styles and remains focused on teaching the practical benefits of karate, with emphasis on traditional techniques.

 

Many club members lead active professional lives, have families, train at gyms and participate in other sports. All enjoy the practical benefits of karate and empowering people to overcome confrontation.

 

Wellington Karate Academy is a registered member of Karate NZ, the official Government sanctioned body, part of the World Karate Federation . 

 

The club is not run as a business. Andy and other seniors Brendan, Martin and Taare train for enjoyment and the betterment of club members.
